Surely you Gest(ure)
Sometimes my favorite drawing from the Monday night life class is one of my gestures. On an average night, we do 1/2 hour of 2 minute gestures and then 3-4 longer poses...15-20 minutes each. This was one of the gestures. I did it on nicer paper than I usually use. Medium was graphite. 2 minutes. Model- Erin.

Newnan Mural
Large mural that I painted a few years back. approx 5' x 14'. Painted on canvas and mounted to the wall in a downtown Newnan office. The building is now for sale and I'm told the owner plans to remove the mural and possibly donate it to the local historical society(I don't know if that is actually going to happen or not as I'm hearing this 3rd person.) The painting was made to be removed however so it should not be too big of a problem...transporting it is another story. The scene shows Newnan, looking from the west around 1929. A bi-plane that delivered mail flies by the depot with the downtown in the background. Buildings that no longer exist are shown.

Merry Christmas
Found this tin for sale online recently. I painted the toys and tree for Andes Candies for their 2000 Christmas tin. Two sides shown. I wanted a Haddon Sundblom feel. Every once in a while an old illustration assignment pops up on Ebay...always fun to see.

"Until Further Notice"
A local favorite for many years, Melear's Barbecue in Newnan, GA. I went there one morning for breakfast and a sign on the door read, "Closed until further notice"...that was 10 or more years ago. This painting shows it shortly after its closing. 18x24 oil on panel.

Panel Portrait
Experimenting with a portrait on artist's panel. This one is unfinished but I'm liking some things about it. Brush strokes, overall color, unfinished quality. 16x20 oil.

Lady Sings the Blues
Billie Holiday provided the perfect music for tonight's 40's themed drawing class. Model, Brandi H, was a lot of fun to draw and provided us with great poses and a great look. We had a good turnout of artists.
Shown is a 10 minute sketch in conte and pastel.

Alex the Cat
A couple of sketches from last nights drawing class. One is a gesture drawing, 2 minutes each figure. Drawn with a "fat" sharpie on newsprint. The other is approx 10-12 minutes, conte. Alex P posed as a cat and did a wonderful job. October is "costume" month and we try to have a different character each Monday evening.

Cows Jumping Over Moons
Something a little different. I found this antique clock cabinet, missing it's clock, and did this oil on panel of a cow jumping over the moon to put in it. I think it'd look great in a nursery or child's room. Ready to hang on the wall or set on a mantle or dresser. Unique, one-of-a-kind piece priced at $385. Dimensions: approx 21"x14"x4"(shipping extra)

Firefly
The model tonight, Melinda S, was in a dance costume that was used as a firefly in the ballet Hansel and Gretel. I thought it looked kind of like a jester..very cool, very colorful. I've simplified it for the time restrictions of the class. This drawing was about 12-15 minutes. Conte and pastel.

Henbit Road
Another painting of a place that I find compelling...Byrdtown, SC. The title refers to the purple "weed" that grows in fields in this area certain times of the year. This painting is an 11x14 oil on panel and is a more involved painting from an earlier 8x8 study.

Fluff
Painting of dancer Chelsea S "fluffing" her tutu. 24x30 on panel. I've done two paintings on panel at this large size and like the results. I'm going to try to get a smoother finish in the gesso coat next time.

Gretel Girl
A second painting of Emily T as Gretel. This one is larger, 24x30 and on my own, semi-homemade panel. Masonite hardboard, two coats of gesso and a wash under painting. I found it much more porous than the factory made panels but I liked it nonetheless. The wash and oils dried faster. Shown is a detail. Still wet...May add a few more final touches as I look at it.

Decorating with Figurative Art
I've heard people say that they like figurative art but can't necessarily see it working in their home. Here is the guest room that my wife put together in our home. She used paintings and drawings of dancers with spectacular results...in my opinion! There's nothing like original art for making a room.

Gretel 2
Oil on panel, 16x20 of Emily T as Gretel. This is a continuation from the life drawings shown earlier. I loved the light on this one and tried to work with looser brush strokes than normal. The panel is gessoed Masonite. Detail of painting also shown.

Gretel
Emily T as Gretel(Hansen and Gretel). Cool costume and great poses make for good drawings...well, at least that's the hope! This one is 10-12 minutes. Conte and pastel

Byrdtown Fields
Small painting of a scene near Hartsville, SC. I've done a number from this area over the years...Byrdtown. This is an 11x14 oil on panel. I had fun playing with the linear
patterns in the fields.

Thoroughly 20's Laura
Model, Laura P, formerly Laura B, posed for the drawing class in 1920's attire. Beautiful dresses! Her poses were fantastic and were very much in keeping with the time period and character that the costumes were used for(plays). She even brought music to go along with the theme. Here are a couple of 12-15 minute sketches from the night. Conte and pastel.
$225 each.

Last Stand Hill
This is a painting I did several years ago but never finalized it. Currently, in reality, there is an iron fence around the foreground markers that include George Custer's marker. I feel that the fence is a visual intrusion and chose to leave it out but never fully settled it in my mind. I'm currently seeking input from LBH followers...and anyone else that may choose to weigh in. View of the Little Bighorn valley from Last Stand Hill.
18x24 oil.

Fallen Flower
In the final stages with this painting. I just set it into a frame and it looks really nice. The frame that I've had for several years is perfect. I'll post a photo of it in the frame later. "Fallen Flower" is the working title for now. Model- Chelsea S. 22x28
Tuesday, May 22, 2012
A couple of small 8"x8" paintings on panel. "Evening Fair" was painted after a trip to the Newnan County Fair last fall. I recently went back into the painting and made a few minor adjustments. "Cloud Study" was from a photo I took just outside my front door. I often shoot clouds for studies such as this but the photos rarely portray the cloud in it's amazing reality. This is a fun size to work in from time to time...quick and spontaneous...a chance to loosen up a bit.
"Evening Fair"- $225
"Cloud Study"- $185

Baby Talk
Great to have new mom, Ashley V(B) back to model tonight at the drawing class...always delightful! Loved this pose and think it might become a painting soon. It was good from every angle. 12-15 minute conte and pastel. I was pleased with all of my drawings tonight...a rare event. Joan Baez entertained us.

Colors
New, on the board, unfinished painting of little ballerinas from the local dance school. I did a painting of a similar subject earlier and have been wanting to do another. This is it. 24x30. Hope to be finished sometime next week....maybe!

Cool Hat
This was the main drawing for a life drawing demo tonight for the art association. Great crowd on a night with a lot of other local events happening. Katie C was the model and posed in a tutu, jean jacket and a cool purple hat. I decided to paint it red for a pop of color. 15-20 minute sketch, conte and pastel.

Old Paint
The Newnan horses are finally out on the square and I can blog about it. This is a fundraiser for the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society. They want to create a children's museum. 25 artists painted horses and colts. Mine is a gift for a man that had a Civil war battle on his property. I put events and people specific to that particular history on his horse. He is a Dr and specializes in breast reconstruction for breast cancer survivors. The horse is called "Survivor"... a nod toward war horses as well as those who have fought cancer. My sponsor was Evelyn Jones. Great project to be a part of. Approx 42 hours to finish.
