Cape Fear

...............We did not "fear" the cape tonight...nor did we fear the hat...we embraced them...actually, we just drew them but had a good time doing so. Great outfit, Erin J model. Fashion Studies

Often, when I have time that I'm not working on commissions, I go back to an earlier interest, fashion illustration. I came within a hair of going in to that profession back in the early 80's when I got out of art school. I'm still inspired by great fashion illustrators of the past and some recent books on the subject are giving them a nice stage on which to be shown. These studies are done fairly quickly...30-45 minutes usually. Mixed media...conte, pastel and oil on bristol board. These three are inspired by Avedon and Hiro photos.

Lady Sings the Blues

Billie Holiday provided the perfect music for tonight's 40's themed drawing class. Model, Brandi H, was a lot of fun to draw and provided us with great poses and a great look. We had a good turnout of artists. Shown is a 10 minute sketch in conte and pastel.

Another conte and pastel fashion sample. These are on 18x24 drawing paper and take up most of the page. Colors are blended with a stump or with my fingers. $250.

Fashion Roots

One of my first job offers after Ringling was as a fashion illustrator in Atlanta. I would have taken it but for an offer from Brown Dog Studios to do more of the type of illustration that I wanted to do. This is a recent sample piece for a company looking for some original paintings and drawings for a new space they're designing. They want a bit of a contemporary edge to the works. I'm trying to introduce the contemporary edge in the actual clothing since my work is fairly traditional. The drawing is influenced by a dress by a designer, Yohji Yamamoto. Very cool, simple, bold.
